About Autism

Although first identified in 1943, autism is still a relatively unknown and misunderstood disability.

Today autism spectrum disorders (asd) are estimated to impact on the lives of more than 500,000 families throughout the UK.

People with an asd 'look' just like anybody without the disability. Due to the invisible nature of the condition, it is often much more difficult to create and raise awareness and understanding.

The condition affects for times more males than females and has no class, racial, cultural barriers.

Autism spectrum disorder (the preferred terminology of today) is a lifelong developmental disability that affects the way a person communicates and relates to people around them. Children and adults with autism have difficulties in their everyday live with social interaction. Their ability to understand other people's emotional expression often creates difficulties associated with friendships and relationships.

People with autism often have accompanying learning disabilities but everyone with the condition shares a difficulty in making sense of the surrounding world.

Asperger syndrome, is a form of autism used to describe people who are usually at the higher functioning end of the autistic spectrum.
