About Autism - How can people with Autism be best supported?

The reality is that the earlier a diagnosis of autism is made, the better the chances are of a person receiving appropriate help and support which will likely impact on their longer term needs and future life.

Due to the diversity of needs and support required by each person having autism, the types of support required by each will vary enormously. For some this may mean occasional support and guidance in order to help them lead an independent life in supported living types of service while for others it may mean full-time placement within a residential living type of service.

Access to services can offen be difficult, irrespective of where people live in the country, services are often, fragmented, absent or underdeveloped.

The NHS and Community Care Act 1990 clearly states that all people with special needs are entitled to an individual community care assessment and thereafter a community care plan. Both the the assessment and planning stages of this process are required to be made in consultation with the individual themselves and, where appropriate, their carers.

A community care plan should consider all the needs of the person, including; their autism needs, accommodation, health care, education, employment and their social needs.
